Drum & Bass Production

In this series we will demonstrate how to design sounds for a drum and bass track, how to make them fit into the mix and how to arrange the track. We will start with the drums and generating a strong balance with modulated bass sounds. We will follow with pads and melodic elements to create ambience in the track, and then we will dive deep into the arrangement to make the track suitable for a DJ set or club environment.

Video 1 - Drums

In this tutorial we will create different drum patterns, adding rhythmic layers to get a fuller sound. Then we will EQ our layers so they each have a place of their own in the mix. Finally, we will process the drum group with a technique that is suitable for this kind of track.

Video 2 - Bass

This video shows how to design an interesting bass patch in Serum, as well as generate responses that compliment the main bass line. You will see the importance of modulating bass sounds in order to achieve not only a richer tone but also to build little rhythmic patterns that can be a great compliment to the drums. The goal would be for you to learn the idea behind this kind of synthesis and open a door on how to think through the process of these sounds.

Video 3 - Melodic Elements

In this video we talk about how to design and choose melodic sounds in Serum. We will check out all the different processes to make them sound unique and how they can evolve through the course of the track.

Video 4 - Risers

In this video we will quickly make a riser with three different layers that will serve as a transition from the intro to the drop.

Video 5 - Arrangement

Once we get all of our sounds designed we will talk about the arrangement of a Drum & Bass track. Following club oriented criteria, we will dive into the process of converting a simple loop into a fully arranged track.
