In this course we’re going to analyze the intro, breakdown, build and drop sections of a progressive house track. I’ll be giving you an in-depth look, channel by channel, at how I put the song together. More specifically, I’ll review concepts such as drum groove, bass synthesis, arpeggios, vocal processing, atmospheric and transitional FX, and arrangement.
Video 1 - Drums
Here we take a deep dive into how I built the drums for this song. I’ll walk you through my thought process and workflow when picking and processing drums, including elements that contribute to groove, helpful techniques for speeding up your workflow, layering sounds, stereo balance, and other useful strategies to make a drum beat appropriate for the genre.
Video 2 -Melodic Elements
This section of the course focuses on the bass and other melodic elements in the track. We’ll take a look at how I designed the bass inside Serum and I’ll explain how I processed the sound to help it fit nicely in the mix. We’ll take a look at how I used the synth Repro-5 for arpeggios, some additional methods for creating interesting melodies, and ways to use automation and modulation to breathe new life into your sounds.
Video 3 - Vocals, Atmos & FX
Progressive house tracks can really benefit from the use of vocals. In this track I used a short vocal sample. We’ll review basic vocal processing techniques to keep the vocal interesting, along with how to build reverse reverb swells. We’ll go over how atmospheric and transitional FX build a space for all of our sounds to live in, and help glue our different song sections together.
Video 4 - Arrangement & Final Touches
In the final video, we will analyze creative transitional tools and final touches to keep the song interesting, along with additional techniques that will help maximize your speed and overall workflow. This includes the use of markers to assist with song arrangement, custom effect racks, volume automation, EQing and limiting.
